Literacy for early years
Year 1 Reading Sheets
A set of 10 reading worksheets to complement the Year 1 reading curriculum. Each worksheet contains a series of questions or activities for the children to complete. The sheets focus on different areas of the curriculum for example story sequencing, the title of the book, settings and characters.
These sheets can be used as part of a Guided Reading session and encourage children to focus on different parts of their book.
Aimed at Year 1
Phonics Initial Sounds Activity
A phonics activity for practising and revising initial sounds.
Children say the initial sound and then read words including the initial sound. Children must then identify the alien word.
Aimed at Early Years and Year 1 to boost their phonics knowledge.

Year 1 Reading Cards
A set of 15 reading cards for Year 1 children. Each card contains two questions or activities for the children to complete linked to their reading book.
These cards can be printed and laminated for use during guided reading or free reading sessions.

Year R Reading Worksheets
A set of 8 reading worksheets to complement the Year R reading curriculum. Each worksheet contains a series of questions or activities for the children to complete. The sheets focus on different areas of the curriculum for example the setting, the characters, my favourite part of the story.
These worksheets involve lots of drawing activities for the children to complete.
These sheets can be used as part of a Guided Reading session and encourage children to focus on different parts of their book.

A set of 15 reading cards for Year R children. Each card contains one question or activity for the children to complete linked to their reading book.
These cards can be printed and laminated for use during guided reading or free reading sessions.

Alphabet Word Cards
A set of alphabet word cards. Each card contains a picture and on the reverse the letters that the children need to write the word. There are 26 cards - one for each letter of the alphabet. Children can write the words and then place the cards in alphabetical order.
Aimed at Early Years and Key Stage 1 children.
Adjectives Bingo
A set of 9 different bingo boards containing pictures of toys and a set of adjective clues.
Children must listen to the adjective clues and check if they have a picture that matches the adjective clues.
Aimed at Key Stage 1.
Adjective Loop Cards/Follow Me Cards
A set of 20 adjective loop/follow me cards.
Each card features a picture and a list of three adjectives. Children must listen carefully to the three adjectives and see if they match the picture on their card. These cards can be started on any card.
Children enjoy playing this game and it teaches them to think about adjectives.
Aimed at Key Stage 1 children.
Fill in the Adjective Game
A game focusing on adjectives.
The game includes five pictures with sets of sentences to match each picture. Each sentence has a space for an adjective eg The ________ moon is shining in the sky. Children have to think of an adjective to go in the space. If children think of an adjective that nobody else thinks of then they win a point. The aim of the game is to collect three points to win.
Children enjoy playing the game and sharing their adjectives.

Split Digraph Revision
A phonics activity for practising and revising split digraphs only. Children can practise writing real and alien words on their whiteboards using focus sounds. The activity could be used during phonics lesson, as an intervention for any children requiring extra support or in the lead up to the phonics screening.
Split Digraph Workbook
A phonics revision activity focusing on split digraphs only. Each split digraph has three workbook pages - one to practise writing real words, one to identify alien words and one to complete a sentence using the focus sound in a word. There is a space on the sentence writing page for children to draw a picture to match their sentence. This activity workbook could be completed as part of a group, independently or could be sent home as home learning/homework.
Aimed at Early Years and Year 1 children.
Alphabet Worksheets
A set of 50 Alphabet Worksheets including matching capital and lower case letters, filling in missing capital and lower case letters, tracing capital and lower case letters and finding objects beginning with different letters of the alphabet in different places eg the playground, the supermarket.
These worksheets encourage children to think of words beginning with each letter of the alphabet and help children to recognise and write capital and lower case letters.
Make a word - cvc and cvcc/cvcc
A set of make the word cards covering cvc and cvcc/ccvc words. Each set includes a word for each consonant of the alphabet except x with the vowel missing. Children can use their vowel cards to make words and then record their words on their worksheet.
Aimed at Early years and KS1 children.
Storytelling Activities
A set of 9 storytelling pictures with three sets of activities including 9 activity cards in each set. Each picture shows a setting. The three sets of activities cover elements of a story, finishing a story and creating a story. These cards can be used for children to orally tell stories and practice their storytelling skills or as part of a writing activity.

Children could have their own copy of the word collector book or there could be a class copy completed with the children.
The word collector book helps to expand children’s vocabulary and encourages children to consider the words that they choose to include in their written pieces.
Aimed at Key Stage 1 children however could also be used with Lower Key Stage 2 children.

Words Instead of Nice Complete Lesson
A complete English lesson covering words that can be used instead of nice.
The PowerPoint gives children examples of alternative words that they can use for nice and builds a list of alternative words - this final list could then be printed out for the children to use when they are writing. Children are then given a sentence with the word nice in and they have to replace the word nice in the sentence - children could rewrite the sentence on their whiteboards and replace the word nice or could simply write an alternative word for nice. The lesson includes three differentiated worksheets and a plenary where children have to find the odd word out eg amazing, helpful, caring and explain why it is the odd word out.
Aimed at Early Years and Key Stage 1 children.
Adjectives Complete Lesson
A complete English lesson for introducing adjectives.
The Powerpoint explains when to use adjectives. Children are then given the opportunity to think of adjectives to describe objects. Children must then identify adjectives in sentences. The lesson includes three differentiated worksheets and a plenary where children have to identify which word is not an adjective.
Aimed at Key Stage 1 children.
Phonics Activity Digraphs and Trigraphs
A phonics activity for practising and revising digraphs and trigraphs.
Children are shown the focus sound and then real words and alien words with the focus sound missing. Children can practise writing real and alien words on their whiteboards using the focus sounds. The activity could be used during phonics lessons, as an intervention for any children requiring extra support or in the lead up to the phonics screening.
A good activity to support children to recognise sounds plus spell and read words using digraphs and trigraphs.
Aimed at Early Years and Year 1 children however could also be used with Year 2 children who need some extra support with Phonics.

A phonics activity workbook covering vowel digraphs and trigraphs.
Each new sound has three workbook pages - one to practise writing real words, one to identify alien words and one to complete a sentence using the focus sound in a word. There is a space on the sentence writing page for children to draw a picture to match the sentence therefore showing their understanding of the sentence.
This activity workbook could be completed as part of a group, independently or could be sent home as home learning/homework.
I have also used this workbook as Early Morning Work for children to practise their phonics. The workbook supports children to become more confident with each focus sound and as the activities are repeated for each new sound the children can become more independent when completing the workbook.
Aimed at Early Years and Year 1 although could be used as a booster or intervention activity for Year 2 children.

English Exit Tickets Year 1
A set of 50 English exit tickets.
Exit tickets can be used at the end of a lesson to assess children’s knowledge and understanding. They can be used to assess what the children have learnt during the lesson or their prior knowledge. These English exit tickets can be used to assess children’s knowledge of the Year 1 curriculum. Each ticket contains a English problem for the children to answer. The English problems include spelling key words, identifying when to use question marks, full stops and exclamation marks, adding un- plus other key skills.
These exit tickets can be printed and laminated or displayed on the Interactive Whiteboard. Each child could solve the same problem or they could all have their own ticket - this method is useful for differentiating and assessing the English knowledge of specific children.
